The Ides of March is the 74th day in the Roman calendar, corresponding to 15 March. It was marked by several religious observances and was notable for the Romans as a deadline for settling debts. In 44 BC, it became notorious as the date of the assassination of Julius Caesar which made the Ides of March a turning point in Roman history.
Caesar was assassinated by roughly 40 senators and 60 co-conspirators. Following his death, the man who led the conspiracy for his murder, Marcus Junius Brutus, issued a coin to commemorate Caesar’s death.
One side of the coin read “Eid Mar” signifying the freedom of Romans from Julius Caesar’s rule by Brutus. Eid Mar is short for “Eidibus Martiis” or “the ides of March.”. This same side of the coin shows daggers and a liberty cap, to remind soldiers of what they fought for. The other side of the coin shows a portrait of Brutus.
This Tuesday, The Ides of March, another epic event is about to take place.
